Proposed subspecies griscomi (described from Cobán, in central Guatemala), is synonymized with boucardi.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

• sallaei Bonaparte, 1856   -  Atlantic slope of southern Mexico (southern Veracruz, Tabasco, eastern Oaxaca and northern Chiapas).
• boucardi Ridgway, 1885   -  Yucatán Peninsula south to central Guatemala and Belize.
