Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane Moist forest, boreal forest, temperate forest.

Range (Guide)
Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Canada (B), Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts And Nevis, St Lucia, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), St Vincent and The Grenadines, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to Brazil (NB), French Polynesia, Greenland, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Breeds in southern Canada (north-eastern British Columbia and northern Alberta east to Nova Scotia) and north-eastern USA eastern from Minnesota and southern in Appalachians to extreme northern Georgia. Migrates to north-western South America west of Andes, south to central Peru; also irregularly southern Central America.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,400,000 (2010) and decreasing.

No subspecies.

Relationship with congeners not clear. Has hybridized with Mourning Warbler (Geothlypis philadelphia).
