Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-throated Warbler (Setophaga dominica), Adelaide's Warbler (Setophaga adelaidae), Barbuda Warbler (Setophaga subita) and St Lucia Warbler (Setophaga delicata) and in the past considered conspecific with the St Lucia Warbler (Setophaga delicata), but it shows constant plumage differences. One record of hybridization with Yellow-rumped Warbler (Setophaga coronata) (of subspecies auduboni). Geographical variation mostly clinal.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
graciae Baird, 1865 - Breeds south-western USA and north-western Mexico. Winters mainly in western and central Mexico.
yaegeri (Phillips, AR & Webster, JD, 1961) - Eastern slope of Sierra Madre Occidental (from southern Sinaloa and Durango south to western Jalisco), in western Mexico; in winter south to Michoacán.
remota (Griscom, 1935) - Highlands from southern Mexico (Michoacán) south to western Nicaragua.
decora (Ridgway, 1873) - Lowlands in Belize, eastern Honduras and Nicaragua.
