Thickets, weedy undergrowth in pine or pine-oak woods, borders, hedgerows, partial clearings, drier piney ridges in cloud forest. From 600 - 2,700 m.

Subspecies
Genus closely related to Melozone and Pyrgisoma. Subspecies pyrgitoides intergrades with pectoralis in area from southern Mexico (central Chiapas), north-central Guatemala and western Belize east to interior highlands of Honduras (possibly also of Nicaragua).
In Mexico, proposed subspecies sinaloa (described from southern Sinaloa), pallida (from Etzatlán, in Jalisco), disjuncta (from San Gabriel Mixtepec, in southern Oaxaca) and cinerea (from Cerro de la Gineta, in south-western Chiapas) are all treated as synonyms of nominate, and newmani (from east of Ciudad del Maiz, in San Luis Potosí) is considered synonymous with pyrgitoides; gigas (from Nebaj, 80 km north of Quiche, in south-western Guatemala) is synonymized with pectoralis.

antonensis van Rossem, 1942 - Sierra de San Antonio, in north-central Sonora, in north-western Mexico.
mcleodii Brewster, 1888 - North-western Mexico from eastern Sonora and western Chihuahua south to northern Sinaloa and north-western Durango.
rufescens (Swainson, 1827) - Western and southern Mexico from southern Sinaloa south to Jalisco, Colima, Guerrero, southern Oaxaca and south-western Chiapas, and east to Guanajuato, México and southern Puebla.
pyrgitoides (Lafresnaye, 1839) - Eastern and south-eastern Mexico from southern Tamaulipas and eastern San Luis Potosí south through eastern Puebla and Veracruz to northern Oaxaca and northern and central Chiapas, and south to Honduras, northern and central El Salvador and north-western Nicaragua.
pectoralis Dickey & van Rossem, 1927 - Southern Mexico (Chiapas) and central and southern Guatemala south to Honduras and El Salvador.
discolor Ridgway, 1888 - Northern Honduras and north-eastern Nicaragua.
hypaethra Bangs, 1909 - Pacific slope of Guanacaste Cordillera, in north-western Costa Rica.
