Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,100 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is 5,000,000 - 50,000,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Cyclarhidae, and sometimes placed in a subfamily, Cyclarhinae. Subspecies flaviventris intergrades with nicaraguae in southern Mexico (south-western Chiapas) and with yucatanensis in Honduras.

The following 22 subspecies are recognised:

  • septentrionalis Phillips, AR, 1991   -  Eastern Mexico (southern Tamaulipas south to northern Hidalgo).
  • flaviventris Lafresnaye, 1842   -  South-eastern Mexico (northern Veracruz, northern Puebla, north-eastern Tabasco, northern and western Chiapas) east to Guatemala and northern Honduras.
  • yucatanensis Ridgway, 1887   -  South-eastern Mexico (Yucatán Peninsula) south to northern Honduras.
  • insularis Ridgway, 1885   -  Cozumel I (off north-eastern Yucatán Peninsula).
  • nicaraguae Miller, W & Griscom, 1925   -  Southern Mexico (central Chiapas), Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua.
  • subflavescens Cabanis, 1861   -  Costa Rica and western Panama (east to Veraguas).
  • perrygoi Wetmore, 1950   -  West-central Panama on Pacific slope.
  • flavens Wetmore, 1950   -  Central and eastern Panama along Pacific coast.
  • coibae Hartert, 1901   -  Coiba I (off south-western Panama).
  • cantica Bangs, 1898   -  Northern and central Colombia (Caribbean coast south to Huila).
  • parva Chapman, 1917   -  North-eastern Colombia and northern Venezuela (south to northern Amazonas).
  • flavipectus Sclater, PL, 1859   -  North-eastern Venezuela and Trinidad.
  • gujanensis (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela, the Guianas, eastern Peru, north-eastern Bolivia (La Paz), and Brazil south to northern Mato Grosso.
  • virenticeps Sclater, PL, 1860   -  Western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
  • contrerasi Taczanowski, 1879   -  South-eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (south to San Martín).
  • saturata Zimmer, JT, 1925   -  Central Peru (R Marañón south to Huánuco).
  • pax Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1942   -  East-central Bolivia (La Paz).
  • dorsalis Zimmer, JT, 1942   -  Highlands of central Bolivia.
  • tarijae Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1942   -  South-eastern Bolivia (Tarija) and extreme north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
  • viridis (Vieillot, 1822)   -  Paraguay and northern Argentina (south to La Rioja, San Luis, Córdoba and Santa Fe).
  • ochrocephala Tschudi, 1845   -  Paraguay south to north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes, Entre Rios, northern Buenos Aires), south-eastern Brazil and Uruguay.
  • cearensis Baird, SF, 1866   -  Eastern Brazil (Maranhío and Ceará south to southern Mato Grosso and Sío Paulo).
