Has been suggested as being sister-species of Tyrannine Woodcreeper (Dendrocincla tyrannina). Subspecies saturata merged with nominate by some authors, but darker, more olive upperparts and allopatric distribution support recognition as separate subspecies.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • anabatina Sclater, 1859   -  Caribbean slope from southern Mexico (south-eastern Veracruz and northern Oaxaca east to southern Quintana Roo) southern and east to north-eastern Nicaragua.
  • typhla Oberholser, 1904   -  Yucatán Peninsula (eastern Yucatán, northern Campeche, northern Quintana Roo).
  • saturata Carriker, 1910   -  Pacific slope of Costa Rica (southern from Gulf of Nicoya) and western Panama (western Chiriquí).
