Subspecies
Plumage similarities and parapatric ranges have suggested to most authors that this and Black-tailed Leaftosser (Sclerurus caudacutus) are sister-species. Substantial individual variation in characters used to define subspecies. It is suspected that all differences may be a combination of clinal and individual variation, and that naming of geographical subspecies thus not warranted. Subspecies ennosiphyllus intergrades with salvini in Atrato Valley (Colombia).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
guatemalensis (Hartlaub, 1844) - Southern Mexico (from Veracruz) south to central Panama (Colón).
salvini Salvadori & Festa, 1899 - Eastern Panama (Panamá to Darién), north-western Colombia (northern Chocó) and western Ecuador (Esmeraldas south to south-western Manabí, formerly to northern Guayas).
ennosiphyllus Wetmore, 1951 - Northern Colombia (Antioquia east to Bolívar).
