Subtropical and tropical dry forest, lowland and monatne moist forest. From 800 - 2,500 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua.

Population
Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Phylogenetic affinity of present species unknown. Specimens from Honduras not racially identifiable; tentatively included in australis, but could belong with itzensis.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • uropygialis Nelson, 1899   -  Western Mexico (southern Sonora south to Guerrero). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Western Grey-collared Becard (Pachyramphus uropygialis).
  • major (Cabanis, 1847)   -  Eastern Mexico (southern Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí­ south to Oaxaca and western Chiapas).
  • itzensis Nelson, 1901   -  South-eastern Mexico (Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo).
  • matudai Phillips, AR, 1966   -  Southern Mexico (Pacific slope of Chiapas) and Guatemala.
  • australis Miller, W & Griscom, 1925   -  Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and north-central Nicaragua.
