Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Genus often placed in Cotingidae, and possibly better treated in that family. Forms a superspecies with Cinereous Mourner (Laniocera hypopyrra).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • rufescens (Sclater, 1858)   -  South-eastern Mexico south to coastal north-western Colombia.
  • griseigula Meyer de Schauensee, 1950   -  North-western Colombia (Córdoba, northern Antioquia, Santander).
  • tertia (Hartert, 1902)   -  South-western Colombia (Cauca, western Nariño) and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, Pichincha).
