Subspecies
Genus often placed in Cotingidae, and possibly better treated in that family. Forms a superspecies with Cinereous Mourner (Laniocera hypopyrra ).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
rufescens (Sclater, 1858) - South-eastern Mexico south to coastal north-western Colombia.
griseigula Meyer de Schauensee, 1950 - North-western Colombia (Córdoba, northern Antioquia, Santander).
tertia (Hartert, 1902) - South-western Colombia (Cauca, western Nariño) and north-western Ecuador (Esmeraldas, Pichincha).
