Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged with Myiobius, with which thought to form a monophyletic clade. Validity of most subspecies considered doubtful, and signatus, purusianus and amazonus perhaps better merged with brunneifrons. Further work required to resolve internal taxonomy.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
fulvigularis (Salvin & Godman, 1889) - South-eastern Mexico (from Tabasco and southern Campeche), northern Guatemala and Belize south to Panama, northern and western Colombia and north-western Ecuador, and locally in northern Venezuela.
venezuelensis Zimmer, JT, 1939 - South-eastern Venezuela (Amazonas, southern Bolívar) and immediately adjacent eastern Colombia (R Guainía) and extreme north-western Brazil (upper R Negro).
erythrurus (Cabanis, 1847) - Eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), the Guianas and north-eastern Brazil (R Negro east to Amapá).
signatus Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Eastern Colombia south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru (north of R Marañón) and locally north-western Brazil (north-western Amazonas south to R Solimíµes).
brunneifrons Hellmayr, 1927 - Eastern Peru (south of R Marañón), adjacent south-western Brazil and north-western and western Bolivia.
purusianus (Parkes & Panza, 1993) - Middle R Purús region of western Brazil.
amazonus Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Central Brazil south of Amazon (R Purús east to R Tapajós, southern along R Madeira to region of mouth of R Jiparaná).
hellmayri (Snethlage, E, 1907) - North-eastern Brazil along lower R Tocantins east to Maranhío.
