Subspecies
Population of south-western USA and north-western Mexico has been recognized as distinct subspecies, superior, but not generally accepted.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
harrisi (Audubon, 1837) - South-western USA (southern California to Texas) through Mexico and Central America (except Belize and Honduras) to drier Pacific slope regions of western Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
unicinctus (Temminck, 1824) - North-eastern Colombia and western Venezuela south through eastern Bolivia and central and north-eastern Brazil (Maranhío and Ceará) to southern Argentina (Río Negro) and south-central Chile (Aisén).
