Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ridgwayi (Gurney Sr, 1884) - Mexico (central Sonora and southern Tamaulipas) south to western Panama.
urubitinga (Gmelin, 1788) - Eastern Panama, west of Andes south to western Ecuador, and east of Andes east to the Guianas, Trinidad and Tobago, and south through eastern Bolivia and Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina (Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe).
