First Described (Guide)
(Linnaeus, 1758)

Habitat
Coasts in non-breeding season. In breeding season prairie, near marshes and ponds.

Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (B) (P), Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Montserrat, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and The Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, USA (B), Venezuela.

Vagrant to Grenada, Jamaica, St Pierre and Miquelon (P), Virgin Islands (British), Virgin Islands (U.S.).

Population
Estimated population is 170,000 (2010).

Food
Mianly insects, crustaceans. Also aquatic plants.

Voice
A loud 'ker-ret'. Also a 'widica widica widica'.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • fedoa (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Central Alberta and south-western Manitoba to south-central Montana and western Minnesota, also south-western James Bay. Winters from California and the Carolinas south to Panama, occasionally occurring south to northern Chile, Colombia and Venezuela.
  • beringiae Gibson & Kessel, 1989   -  Alaska Peninsula. Winters on Pacific coast of USA from southern Washington to central California.
