Subspecies
Forms a superspecies complex with Tolima Dove (Leptotila conoveri) and Ochre-bellied Dove (Leptotila ochraceiventris).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cerviniventris Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868 - Caribbean lowlands of Guatemala south through Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua to north-western Costa Rica and western Panama (Chiriquí Lagoon).
rufinucha Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1873 - South-western Costa Rica and north-western Panama (Chiriquí).
cassinii Lawrence, 1867 - Canal Zone in Panama south-east to lower Cauca-Magdalena region in northern Colombia.
