Habitat
Subtropical and tropical heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Argentina, Aruba, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay (B), USA (B), Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Columbigallina. Forms a superspecies with Ecuadorian Ground-dove (Columbina buckleyi).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • eluta (Bangs, 1901)   -  Pacific coast of Mexico from northern Sinaloa to Chiapas.
  • rufipennis (Bonaparte, 1855)   -  East-central Mexico (central Veracruz) through Central America to Colombia and northern Venezuela, as well as Margarita I, Trinidad and Tobago.
  • caucae (Chapman, 1915)   -  Cauca Valley of western Colombia.
  • talpacoti (Temminck, 1809)   -  Eastern Ecuador and north-western and eastern Peru east to the Guianas, and south through Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil (south to Rio Grande do Sul) to Uruguay and northern Argentina (south to Buenos Aires). Non-breeding visitor to central Chile, including Lake District.
