Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Peruvian Pigeon (Patagioenas oenops) and Plain Pigeon (Patagioenas inornata).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
restricta (van Rossem, 1930) - Western Mexico, from west-central Sonora to Sinaloa.
madrensis (Nelson, 1898) - Tres Marías Is (off west-central Mexico).
flavirostris Wagler, 1831 - Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas through south-eastern Sonora, Sierra Madre in Chihuahua, and San Luis Potosí south to Nicaragua and eastern Costa Rica.
minima (Carriker, 1910) - Lowlands of Costa Rica about Gulf of Nicoya.
