Subspecies
Together with Plain-capped Starthroat (Heliomaster constantii) occasionally separated in genus Anthoscenus, on basis of squarish tail, rounded rectrices and details of bill morphology. However, the distinguishing features vary in a continuum between these species and Blue-tufted Starthroat (Heliomaster furcifer), with Stripe-breasted Starthroat (Heliomaster squamosus) occupying an intermediate position, and treatment of all four as congeners now generally considered more appropriate. Some authors also merge Rhodopis. Several additional subspecies described, notably masculinus (south-central Mexico), veraguensis (Panama), chalcurus (Costa Rica), stuartae (Colombia) and caeruleiceps (Bolivia), but most have not been sustained and now included within nominate. Separation of pallidiceps from nominate has been questioned.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallidiceps Gould, 1861   -  Southern Mexico to Nicaragua.
  • longirostris (Audebert & Vieillot, 1801)   -  Eastern and south-western Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia south to eastern Bolivia and central and north-eastern Brazil; Trinidad.
  • albicrissa Gould, 1871   -  Western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
