Subspecies
Curiously disjunct distribution largely accounts for frequent treatment of subspecies astec as distinct species, incorporating subspecies vicinalis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

vicinalis Bangs & Penard, TE, 1919 - North-eastern Mexico.
astec (Souanc�, 1857) - Caribbean slope from south-eastern Mexico to western Panama. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Aztec Parakeet (Eupsittula astec).
nana (Vigors, 1830) - Jamaica.
