Subspecies
Perhaps most closely related to Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus), Lattice-tailed Trogon (Trogon clathratus) and Choco Trogon (Trogon comptus). Subspecies australis sometimes placed with Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus). Alternatively, when subspecies macroura of Black-tailed Trogon (Trogon melanurus) is treated as full species, australis is sometimes considered a subspecies of that. Subspecies hoffmanni intergrades with nominate in north and with australis in south. This subspecies is not well defined and possibly invalid.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • massena Gould, 1838   -  Caribbean slope of south-eastern Mexico (eastern from Veracruz), Belize, northern Guatemala, northern Honduras, and both slopes in Nicaragua.
  • hoffmanni (Cabanis & Heine, 1863)   -  Costa Rica (not dry north-west) and Panama.
  • australis (Chapman, 1915)   -  Western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
