Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 750 m, occasionally to 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)

Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.

Eastern Mexico (from southern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca) south to western Panama.

Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Possibly forms a superspecies with Chestnut Woodpecker (Celeus elegans), Pale-crested Woodpecker (Celeus lugubris) and Blond-crested Woodpecker (Celeus flavescens).
