Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 750 m, occasionally to 1,000 m.
Belize, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama.
Eastern Mexico (from southern Veracruz, northern Oaxaca) south to western Panama.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).

Possibly forms a superspecies with Chestnut Woodpecker (Celeus elegans ), Pale-crested Woodpecker (Celeus lugubris ) and Blond-crested Woodpecker (Celeus flavescens ).
