Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, dry forest, temperate forest. From sea-level - 3,300 m.
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, USA (B).
Vagrant to Canada.
From western North America to Colombia.

Nest
In a hole cut into the trunk of a tree.
Subspecies
Proposed subspecies martirensis (northern Baja California) considered indistinguishable from bairdi. Subspecies lineatus doubtfully distinct from albeolus.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
- bairdi Ridgway, 1881 - North-western Oregon south to northern Baja California.
- formicivorus (Swainson, 1827) - Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas south to south-eastern Mexico (west of Chiapas).
- angustifrons Baird, SF, 1870 - Extreme southern Baja California.
- albeolus Todd, 1910 - South-eastern Mexico (eastern Chiapas, probably also Tabasco and Campeche), north-eastern Guatemala and Belize.
- lineatus (Dickey & van Rossem, 1927) - Chiapas east to Guatemala and northern Nicaragua.
- striatipectus Ridgway, 1874 - Nicaragua to western Panama.
- flavigula (Malherbe, 1849) - Colombia (western and central Andes and western slope of eastern Andes).
