(Swainson, 1827)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, dry forest, temperate forest. From sea-level - 3,300 m.

Range (Guide)
Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, USA (B).

Vagrant to Canada.

From western North America to Colombia.
 
Population
Estimated population is 4,000,000 (2010).

Acorns. Also insects in summer and other nuts and fruit in winter.

Nest
In a hole cut into the trunk of a tree.

Subspecies
Proposed subspecies martirensis (northern Baja California) considered indistinguishable from bairdi. Subspecies lineatus doubtfully distinct from albeolus.

The following 7 subspecies are recognised:

  • bairdi Ridgway, 1881   -  North-western Oregon south to northern Baja California.
  • formicivorus (Swainson, 1827)   -  Arizona, New Mexico and western Texas south to south-eastern Mexico (west of Chiapas).
  • angustifrons Baird, SF, 1870   -  Extreme southern Baja California.
  • albeolus Todd, 1910   -  South-eastern Mexico (eastern Chiapas, probably also Tabasco and Campeche), north-eastern Guatemala and Belize.
  • lineatus (Dickey & van Rossem, 1927)   -  Chiapas east to Guatemala and northern Nicaragua.
  • striatipectus Ridgway, 1874   -  Nicaragua to western Panama.
  • flavigula (Malherbe, 1849)   -  Colombia (western and central Andes and western slope of eastern Andes).
