Habitat
Semi-arid mallee or acacia shrublands and woodlands with a shrubby understorey. Sometimes taller eucalypt woodlands or forests.

Habits
Usually singly or in pairs.

Food
Insects and their larvae, but occasionally seeds and fruit.

Voice
A far-carrying sequence of 15 husky, mellow, slightly nasal, deep whistled calls, starting low and building to a crescendo, each call with a sharper whip-crack effect, 'cheop-cheop-cheiop-cheiop-cheeeiop-cheeiop'. A scratchy, 'eechowk, eechowk, eechowk, eechowk' and a clear, strong, whistled, 'eew-whit, ew-whit, ew-whit'.

Nest
Cup-shaped, composed mainly of dry bark, in a low bush or on top of an old nest of a babbler.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 4; cream-buff, spotted with brown-black and lavender, often in a zone at the larger end; oval; about 23 x 17 mm. Incubation: about 15 days; mainly by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fed by both parents.
