Primarily in Dicksonia externa fern forest. From 800 - 1,300 m, occasionally down to 600 m.

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat destruction, degradation and fragmentation through goat-trampling, fire and timber-cutting, introduced mammalian predators, are the main threats.

Voice
Often delivers churring 'trrrt' call.
Subspecies
No subspecies.
Affinities of genus uncertain. Plumage features suggest possible relationship to Phleocryptes and Pygarrhichas. Close to Thorn-tailed Rayadito (Aphrastura spinicauda), having diverged from that or from common ancestor.
