Subspecies
Genus was long known as Spizitornis. Plumage and molecular evidence suggest that present species is closely related to Ash-breasted Tit-Tyrant (Anairetes alpinus).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
huancabambae (Chapman, 1924) - Northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca, eastern La Libertad, Huánuco).
arequipae (Chapman, 1926) - South-western Peru (southern from Lima) south to north-western Chile (Arica, Tarapacá).
cuzcoensis (Chapman, 1924) - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco).
flavirostris Sclater & Salvin, 1876 - Breeds in high Andes of Bolivia and in western Argentina (south to Mendoza and northern Chubut); east to Buenos Aires and Entre Ríos in non-breeding season.
