Habitat
Arid to semihumid oak and pine-oak forest on rocky slopes. Also found in wooded gullies and overgrown fields with scattered trees. From 1,200 - 2,500 m.

Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Otophanes , usually along with Yucatan Poorwill (Nyctiphrynus yucatanicus ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
mcleodii (Brewster, 1888) - North-western Mexico (Chihuahua and southern Sonora to Jalisco and Colima).
rayi (Miller, AH, 1948) - Central-western Mexico (Guerrero).
