Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, temperate forest, high altitude shrubland. From 1,500 - 2,500 m, occasionally to 3,750 m.
Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, USA (B).
Western and west-central USA (southern Idaho and northern Wyoming south to eastern California, Arizona and south-western Texas) south through upland Mexico to highlands of Guatemala. Northern populations winter in Mexico and Guatemala.

Estimated population is 4,000,000 (2010).

In past, occasionally placed in Archilochus .
Proposed subspecies guatemalae (Guatemala) is poorly defined: morphological patterns and variation in size are clinal in character.
