Subspecies
A problem exists regarding nomenclature of subspecies aurora: description of name warszewizii [sic] obviously describes the same subspecies, but described in same year and cannot be dated exactly to the month. In the absence of clarification, aurora has become the accepted name.

Proposed subspecies hypocrita (Chachapoyas), based on immature plumage, is synonym of fulgidiceps.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

hesperus (Gould, 1865) - South-western Ecuador (Cuenca).
iris (Gould, 1854) - Southern Ecuador (Loja) to northern Peru (Piura).
aurora (Gould, 1853) - Northern Peru (Cutervo, Cerros de Amachonga).
fulgidiceps (Simon, 1921) - Northern Peru east of Marañón (Chachapoyas, Tamiapampa, Leimebamba, Levanto).
flagrans Zimmer, JT, 1951 - North-western Peru (Cajamarca).
eva (Salvin, 1897) - Northern Peru west of R Marañón on eastern slope of western Andes (Cajamarca, La Libertad).
