Subspecies
Geographical variation weak and largely clinal, plumage becoming darker from west to east.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
lucifer Meinertzhagen, R & Meinertzhagen, A, 1926 - Southern Tibetan Plateau (south-western and southern Xizang) and Himalayas from eastern Kashmir, Ladakh and north-western India (northern Himachal Pradesh) east to northern Nepal and northern Bhutan.
rubicilloides Przewalski, 1876 - Eastern Tibetan Plateau east to central and southern China (Qinghai and eastern and north-eastern Xizang east to Gansu and western Sichuan). Winters south to southern Sichuan and northern Yunnan.
