Subspecies
Geographical variation extremely well marked in some cases, isolated subspecies wrayi perhaps approaching species level. Birds in Cambodia (except south-west) of uncertain racial identity.
Proposed subspecies ariel, described from near Nokrek (in Garo Hills), in north-eastern India, considered inseparable from assamensis.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
saturata (Hodgson, 1836) - Himalayas from northern India (Garhwal and Mussoorie) east to Nepal, Bhutan and southern China (south-eastern Xizang).
assamensis (Horsfield, 1840) - North-eastern India, northern Myanmar and southern China (western Yunnan).
petersi Deignan, 1948 - Eastern Myanmar, extreme northern Thailand, northern Laos, northern Vietnam and south-eastern China (south-eastern Yunnan, western Guangxi).
