Subspecies
Plumage similarities have suggested to some authors that this is the sister-species to Rusty-fronted Canastero (Asthenes ottonis) and others have proposed that the two form a superspecies with Maquis Canastero (Asthenes heterura), or that latter is a subspecies of one or other of them. Plumage differences of subspecies grisior possibly due to clinal variation. Further study is needed.
Proposed subspecies saturata, described from western Peru, considered indistinguishable from neglecta.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
neglecta (Cory, 1916) - North-western Peru in western Andes (La Libertad, Ancash).
pudibunda (Sclater, 1874) - Western Peru in western Andes (Lima).
grisior Koepcke, 1961 - Andes of south-western Peru (Huancavelica to Tacna) and northern Chile (Tarapacá).
