Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Swinhoe's Rail (Coturnicops exquisitus), with which sometimes regarded as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
noveboracensis (Gmelin, 1789) - South-central and south-eastern Canada to north-central and north-eastern USA, with isolated population in north-western USA. Winters in southern and south-eastern USA.
goldmani (Nelson, 1904) - Marshes of R Lerma, central Mexico.
