Subspecies
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus), Orange-billed Sparrow (Arremon aurantiirostris), Golden-winged Sparrow (Arremon schlegeli) and Black-capped Sparrow (Arremon abeillei).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

dorbignii Sclater, PL, 1856 - Central and southern Bolivia (Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy and Salta south to Catamarca).
devillii Des Murs, 1856 - Eastern Bolivia (eastern Santa Cruz) and central Brazil (central Mato Grosso east to western Goi�s and western S�o Paulo).
flavirostris Swainson, 1838 - Central and eastern Brazil (south-eastern Mato Grosso east to southern Goi�s, Bahia, western Minas Gerais and northern and central S�o Paulo).
polionotus Bonaparte, 1850 - Southern Brazil (southern Mato Grosso and western Paran�), Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes, eastern Formosa and eastern Chaco).
