Subspecies
Has been suggested as forming a superspecies with Pectoral Sparrow (Arremon taciturnus), Orange-billed Sparrow (Arremon aurantiirostris), Golden-winged Sparrow (Arremon schlegeli) and Black-capped Sparrow (Arremon abeillei).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • dorbignii Sclater, PL, 1856   -  Central and southern Bolivia (Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz, Chuquisaca and Tarija) and north-western Argentina (Jujuy and Salta south to Catamarca).
  • devillii Des Murs, 1856   -  Eastern Bolivia (eastern Santa Cruz) and central Brazil (central Mato Grosso east to western Goiás and western Sío Paulo).
  • flavirostris Swainson, 1838   -  Central and eastern Brazil (south-eastern Mato Grosso east to southern Goiás, Bahia, western Minas Gerais and northern and central Sío Paulo).
  • polionotus Bonaparte, 1850   -  Southern Brazil (southern Mato Grosso and western Paraná), Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones, Corrientes, eastern Formosa and eastern Chaco).
