Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Atticora or, more usually, in Pygochelidon. DNA studies on this species suggest that present genus, although close to former and to Neochelidon, is distinct.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cyanoleuca (Vieillot, 1817) - Eastern Costa Rica and Panama (highlands), Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and from Ecuador, northern and eastern Peru and central and north-eastern Brazil south to north-western Argentina (Tucumán), Paraguay and Uruguay.
peruviana (Chapman, 1922) - Coastal Peru.
patagonica (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) - Breeds from central Chile and central Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego; in non-breeding season northern South America (south to northern Chile and northern Argentina) and southern Central America.
