Subspecies
Genus formerly placed in its own separate family, Vireolaniidae. Alternatively, is sometimes placed in a subfamily, Vireolaniinae. Present species has been placed by some authorities in separate genus, Smaragdolanius, along with Green Shrike-vireo (Vireolanius pulchellus) and Yellow-browed Shrike-vireo (Vireolanius eximius).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
mikettae Hartert, 1900 - Western Colombia (south of R San Juan) and western Ecuador (south to north-western Azuay). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pale-legged Shrike-vireo (Vireolanius mikettae).
leucotis (Swainson, 1837) - Southern Venezuela (Bolívar, Amazonas) and the Guianas south to northern Brazil (north of Amazon); extreme southern Colombia (south-eastern Nariño), eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (south to San Martín).
simplex von Berlepsch, 1912 - Eastern Peru (Huánuco south to Ayacucho and Cuzco) and north-central Brazil south of Amazon (R Purús east to R Tocantins, south to north-western Mato Grosso).
bolivianus von Berlepsch, 1901 - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco) south to north-central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
