Subspecies
May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. This and other members of genus form a well-defined species group. Present species is morphologically and vocally the most distinct of the group. Subspecies currently included herein possibly involve more than one species, while some of the plumage variation may be only clinal and a taxonomic study is needed. Birds from south of range (south-eastern Peru east to upper R Juruá, in western Brazil, and south to northern Bolivia) described as subspecies badia, but appear to intergrade with purusiana and considered better merged with that.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
melanosticta (Sclater & Salvin, 1880) - South-central Colombia (base of Andes from Meta south to Putumayo), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon in vicinity of R Napo and north of R Marañón).
brunneiceps Chapman, 1928 - Central Peru south of R Marañón and west of R Ucayali (San Martín south to northern Ayacucho).
purusiana (Snethlage, E, 1908) - Eastern Peru (south of R Amazon, east of R Ucayali), south-western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira) and north-western Bolivia (Pando, La Paz).
badia Zimmer, JT, 1932 - South-eastern Peru, northern Bolivia and south-western Amazonian Brazil.
