Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-bellied Antwren (Isleria guttata), but their relationship to other groups in the genus is uncertain. Described subspecies clarior (central Brazil) appears to intergrade clinally with nominate and is merged with it, pending further study.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • suffusa (Zimmer, JT, 1932)   -  South-eastern Colombia (from Meta southern along base of Andes, east to eastern Vaupés), extreme north-western Amazonian Brazil (west of R Japurá), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (Loreto and Amazonas north of R Marañón).
  • hauxwelli (Sclater, 1857)   -  Eastern Peru (south of R Amazon and R Marañón), south-western and south-central Amazonian Brazil (east to R Xingu in Pará, south to Acre and south-western and northern Mato Grosso) and north-western and north-eastern Bolivia (Pando, Beni, La Paz, north-eastern Santa Cruz).
  • hellmayri (Snethlage, E, 1906)   -  East of R Xingu in eastern Pará and western Maranhío.
  • clarior (Zimmer, JT, 1932)   -  Central Brazil.
