Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,400 - 3,050 m, occasionally down to 800 m.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
pulcher (Sclater, 1860) - Western Colombia and north-western Ecuador.
bellus (Sclater, PL, 1862) - Central and eastern Colombia and north-eastern and south-eastern Ecuador.
oblitus (Bond, J, 1943) - South-eastern Peru.
