Subspecies
Genus as presently constituted may be polyphyletic. Objective phylogenetic analysis, using molecular characters as well as anatomical ones, is required in order to define generic limits. Anatomical evidence suggests that present species may be closest to Grey-capped Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias griseocapilla) and Sooty-headed Tyrannulet (Phyllomyias griseiceps) and that all three perhaps unrelated to others of genus, some or all of which possibly better placed in resurrected genus Tyranniscus.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cearae Hellmayr, 1927 - North-eastern Brazil (Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte south to Sergipe).
fasciatus (Thunberg, 1822) - Eastern Brazil (Maranhío and western Bahia south to south-eastern Mato Grosso and southern Goiás) and western and north-eastern Bolivia.
