Subspecies
Like Ornate Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus ornatus), not clearly related to Old World species of the genus.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
serus Friedmann, 1950 - Central Mexico south to Colombia, whence east of Andes to the Guianas, Trinidad and Brazil, and south to Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina; recent records west of Andes in Ecuador and Peru (but not Colombia).
tyrannus (Wied, 1820) - Eastern and southern Brazil and extreme north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
