Subspecies
Like most of congeners, formerly placed in genus Oreopeleia. Closely related to Lined Quail-Dove (Zentrygon linearis). Subspecies bourcieri and erythropareia have been considered separate species, and in past whole species erroneously labelled as "Geotrygon bourcieri". However, differences probably exaggerated, and erythropareia may be merely a dark morph. Indeed, subdivision into subspecies may be altogether invalid, and species may better be considered monotypic.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
bourcieri (Bonaparte, 1855) - Western Colombia and western Ecuador.
erythropareia Salvadori, 1893 - Eastern Ecuador.
frenata (Tschudi, 1843) - Northern Peru to central Bolivia.
margaritae (Blake, Hoy, G & Contino, 1961) - Southern Bolivia to north-western Argentina.
