Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,650 - 3,000 m, occasionally down to 1,600 m.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.
Confined to Andes, from western Venezuela to south-western Colombia, south through central Ecuador, western and southern Peru to western Bolivia.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Short-tailed Nighthawk (Lurocalis semitorquatus ), with which probably forms superspecies.
