Subspecies
Probably forms superspecies with Golden Starfrontlet (Coeligena eos), Golden-bellied Starfrontlet (Coeligena bonapartei), Blue-throated Starfrontlet (Coeligena helianthea) and Buff-winged Starfrontlet (Coeligena lutetiae).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • dichroura (Taczanowski, 1874)   -  Southern Ecuador (Loja) and eastern Andes of northern and central Peru; relict population in western Peru (Lima). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Huanuco Starfrontlet (Coeligena dichroura).
  • albicaudata Schuchmann & Zuchner, 1998   -  Apurímac region (southern Peru). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Apurimac Starfrontlet (Coeligena albicaudata).
  • osculans (Gould, 1871)   -  Eastern Andes of south-eastern Peru (south-east of Urubamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cuzco Starfrontlet (Coeligena osculans).
  • violifer (Gould, 1846)   -  Eastern Andes of north-western Bolivia.
