Trapping for the cage-bird trade is the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

maximiliani (Kuhl, 1820) - North-eastern and central-eastern Brazil.
siy Souanc�, 1856 - South-eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, central-western and central-southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
lacerus Heine, 1884 - North-western Argentina in Tucumán, eastern Catamarca and southern Salta.
melanoblepharus Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 - South-eastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay and northern Argentina in Misiones.
