Proposed subspecies propinquus probably represents southern populations of a cline of increasing size. Nominate subspecies intergrades throughout central Amazonia with subspecies callogenys.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • nicefori (Meyer de Schauensee, 1946)   -  Meta, eastern Colombia.
  • callogenys (Salvadori, 1891)   -  South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-western Peru and extreme north-western Brazil into central Amazonia.
  • leucophthalmus (Müller, 1776)   -  Eastern Venezuela and the Guianas through virtually all Brazil to northern and eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, northern Argentina and northern Uruguay.
