Subspecies
Formerly placed in genus Phloeoceastes with seven other species, all of which are now lumped into Campephilus. Subspecies trachelopyrus intergrades with nominate in south-west of range.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
rubricollis (Boddaert, 1783) - Eastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador to Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil (north of Amazon).
trachelopyrus (Malherbe, 1857) - North-eastern Peru and western Brazil (south of Amazon) south to west-central Bolivia (La Paz).
olallae (Gyldenstolpe, 1945) - Brazil south of Amazon, from R Madeira east to Pará and Maranhío, and south to central Bolivia (Cochabamba) and northern Mato Grosso.
