Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-barred Piculet (Picumnus cirratus) and Ochre-collared Piculet (Picumnus temminckii), and sometimes treated as conspecific with White-barred Piculet (Picumnus cirratus), or with both. Interbreeds with White-barred Piculet (Picumnus cirratus) and with White-wedged Piculet (Picumnus albosquamatus). Apparently as the result of a perpetuated error, species name has almost universally been misspelt "dorbygnianus", but in original description scientific name incorporated d'Orbigny's name correctly spelt, so rectification is required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

jelskii Taczanowski, 1882 - Andes of eastern Peru.
dorbignyanus Lafresnaye, 1845 - Central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, western Santa Cruz) and extreme north-western Argentina (Jujuy, Salta).
