Habitat
Lowland, riverine, humid forest. Always near water.
Bolivia (B), Brazil (B), Colombia (B), Ecuador (E) (B), Peru (B).
Amazon basin in Brazil, south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and northern Bolivia; range very incompletely known.

Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Hunting and, to some extent, habitat loss are the main threats.

Habits
Forage on inundated ground in small groups.
Food
Small fish, insects, aquatic crustaceans, other small animals and fruit.
Voice
A high, descending, whistled 'wheeeeeeeee'.

Subspecies
All members of genus form superspecies. Crax carunculata and Crax yarrellii are synonyms.
Has hybridized in captivity with Blue-billed Curassow (Crax alberti).
No subspecies.
