Subspecies
Has been considered to include Baudo Guan (Penelope ortoni) as a subspecies, but without any trace of intergradation where they overlap, so they probably do not even form a superspecies.
Population of south-eastern Peru was separated as subspecies, marcapatensis, but later recognized as synonym of plumosa.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
montagnii (Bonaparte, 1856) - North-western Venezuela and northern and central Colombia.
atrogularis Hellmayr & Conover, 1932 - Western slope of Andes in southern Colombia and Ecuador.
brooki Chubb, C, 1917 - Eastern slope of Andes in southern Colombia and Ecuador.
plumosa von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902 - Eastern slope of Andes in Peru.
sclateri Gray, GR, 1860 - Yungas of Bolivia; usually said to occur in extreme northern Argentina too, but this is based on two specimens recently shown to belong to Red-faced Guan (Penelope dabbenei).
