Orange-bellied Flowerpecker (Dicaeum trigonostigma) [XC244253]
by Marc Anderson from Carita, Kabupaten Pandeglang, Banten, Indonesia (call)
Subspecies
Tongue morphology similar to that of Pale-billed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum erythrorhynchos), Pygmy Flowerpecker (Dicaeum pygmaeum), Midget Flowerpecker (Dicaeum aeneum), Blood-breasted Flowerpecker (Dicaeum sanguinolentum) and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum cruentatum), although one specimen exhibits a unique variation. Geographical variation considerable, some of it well marked. Subspecies fall into two groups, "dorsale group" in Philippines and "nominate group" in rest of range. Former can be divided into four subgroups, namely "dorsale subgroup" (from Luzon to western Visayan Is, excluding islands in Sibuyan Sea), "sibuyanicum subgroup" (islands in Sibuyan Sea), "cinereigulare subgroup" (eastern Visayan Is south to Mindanao), and "sibutuense subgroup" (Sulu Archipelago). Nominate subspecies intergrades with rubropygium in southern peninsular Thailand. Subspecies cnecolaemum doubtfully distinct from intermedium, and antioproctum possibly better subsumed in nominate.
Other proposed subspecies are croceoventre (described from Sumatra), melanthe (Lasia I, off north-western Sumatra), lyprum (Nias I, off western Sumatra), tanamassae (Tanahmasa, in Batu Is, off western Sumatra), pagense (South Pagai I, off western Sumatra) and hypochloum (Siantan, in Anamba Is, east of Peninsular Malaysia), all synonymized with nominate, and hanadori (Siasi, in Sulu Archipelago), merged with assimile.
The following 18 subspecies are recognised:
rubropygium Baker, ECS, 1921 - North-eastern India (eastern Assam),
Bangladesh (including Sundarbans), south-west, south-eastern and southern Myanmar south to S
peninsular Thailand.
trigonostigma (Scopoli, 1786) - Southern peninsular Thailand (S
from Trang) and Peninsular Malaysia, Anamba Is, Riau Archipelago,
Lingga Archipelago, Sumatra and satellites (except Simeulue) and
Karimata I (off south-western Borneo).
antioproctum Oberholser, 1912 - Simeulue I, off NW
Sumatra.
