Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Melodious Babbler (Malacopteron palawanense) and sometimes thought possibly conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
magnum Eyton, 1839 - Extreme southern Myanmar (extreme southern Tenasserim), southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, northern Natuna Is and Borneo (except north).
